Sand Tetris

Sand Tetris is a unique puzzle game where colorful blocks transform into piles of sand as they fall onto the sand heap at the bottom of the board.

How Sand Tetris works

The core gameplay of Sand Tetris looks familiar at first: tetromino-shaped blocks fall from the top of the screen, and your goal is to keep the board from overflowing.

However, there’s one major twist. Instead of remaining solid, each block breaks into hundreds of tiny sand particles when touched. The particles then shift naturally under the influence of gravity and nearby gaps.

To clear space, you must create a continuous horizontal line of the same color stretching from one side of the container to the other.

Controls

  • Use the arrow keys or swipe controls to move and rotate pieces.
  • Press the spacebar or swipe downward for a hard drop.

Best Sand Tetris strategies for high scores

After reaching a score of 171,666 in one of my recent runs, I started noticing several patterns that consistently improved my survival time.

Build wide instead of tall

One of the biggest beginner mistakes is creating narrow towers near the walls. In classic Tetris, vertical stacking can work well, but in Sand Tetris, it often leads to chain collapses.

A flatter surface gives the sand more room to settle naturally.

Use the “V Shape” technique

I usually aim pieces toward the center of the board instead of the edges.

This creates a shallow “V” formation in which sand naturally flows outward and fills empty gaps more efficiently. It also reduces dangerous pockets forming near the walls.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you rotate blocks after they turn into sand?

No. Once the transformation begins, the original shape disappears permanently.

Does the game get faster over time?

Yes. Gravity intensity gradually increases, making accurate placement much harder during longer runs.

Is there an undo button?

The game does not include one, so every placement matters.

Is Sand Tetris harder than classic Tetris?

Yes. The unpredictable sand physics add an extra layer of difficulty that traditional Tetris doesn't.
