The pieces move according to their own rules: the king moves one square, the queen moves horizontally, vertically, and diagonally, the rook moves in a straight line, the bishop moves diagonally, the knight moves in an L-shape, and the pawn moves straight but captures diagonally.

Master's tips

Chess is more than just moving pieces:

• Promotion: When a pawn reaches the last row, it can be exchanged for a queen, rook, knight, or bishop.
